Revitalize a Home By Recycling

July 27th, 2010

People today are more conscious of their budget than ever. There are many recycled products on the market today that are cheaper than buying traditionally manufactured home décor, but for those who would rather not spend any money, many items around the home can also be recycled into new, trendy, and elegant pieces that add an aesthetic appeal to any home.

By looking for materials already in the home that can be repurposed, one can have everything they need to work with and it will cost very little to repurpose it.  For example, by looking for things that are worn out, out-of-date, or have been hidden in an attic or basement for years many times all the materials required are right at hand.  With a little insight and creativity any piece that’s ready to go in the garbage can find a new use again.

Let’s take that old coach, for instance, since it’s probably seen better days especially if it is in a family room.  Since formal living rooms are used less often, a simple refurbishing job can bring it into style in a way appropriate for the formal space leaving the sturdier living room sofa available for the family room.

Updating this piece of furniture can be accomplished in several ways.  First is to determine if it’s still structurally sound, but just worn out.  As long as springs are poking through and the wood isn’t broken, it’s an easy fix.  Most come with detachable cushions which are easy to recover.  By taking apart the old covers, one has a template from which to work.  Simply cut out the pieces of the new material from the patterns made, sew them together, and slip the old padding back in.  Within hours you can transform a sofa or chair to look like new.  By adding accent pillows, any differences in color or fabric pattern from the original can be easily disguised and it didn’t cost more than a few dollars.

The same can be done with refinishing coffee tables, side tables, dressers, almost anything.  With a littler sanding any old piece can take on a new appearance and, by adding decorative molding, the entire look can be changed.  If looking through decorating magazines one will find two predominant trends; Old World and Contemporary.  Old World has the advantage of allowing for a variety of pieces that, when mixed, create an eclectic, but well put together look.  Contemporary, on the other hand tends to be minimalistic.  Therefore, knowing beforehand how you want your spaces to look when you’re finished is important.

For those without money to spend on remodeling, recycled products can save you money in the long-run as well as help the environment.  For example, roofing and floor tiles are now made out of old rubber tires.  They wear better, last longer, and have a tendency to be more durable than their ceramic or stone-based counterparts.  Additionally, many amazing bargains can be found at flea markets, garage sales, thrift stores, and even from family and friends who have items they don’t really want, but don’t know what to do with.
