Creating the Perfect Sanctuary

September 13th, 2010

The haven of any home is not usually located inside the structure, but is found instead in the backyard.  Sitting in a patio area that is not only well-designed, but appealing can bring a sense of calm and order to an otherwise hectic lifestyle.  For many the importance of this space is not initially considered during the purchase process of the home, but its significance becomes apparent after that first heady brew of coffee is sipped while watching the wildlife begin their day in the backyard during the early morning hours.

Designing and crafting the perfect sanctuary can be a trying experience because once it’s finished it is unlikely to ever be replaced.  It is important, therefore, to consider not only the initial costs involved in a project of this undertaking, but the long-term aesthetic appeal, as well.  Materials for the base of any backyard structure are a first consideration since they will set the tone for the overall design.

Many of the older homes in the U.S. can be found with slab patios.  Concrete was used for many reasons, primarily because the cost of pouring the extended slab during the construction process significantly reduced expenditures.  The slab, however, has become passé not only because of its lack of warmth and character, but because of the destructive nature of the elements on this type of material.  Since they are less forgiving than other patio materials, they tend to crack and begin to break down without constant upkeep.  However, if this is your first choice, today’s professional concrete contractors have technology that will improve not only the quality and life of a concrete patio, but can enhance its charm as well.  Nothing is more beautiful that squares of concrete flooring that have been tinted in a rainbow of colors to enhance any décor.  Additionally, with the use of smaller pours, there is less chance the material will crack or degrade over time.

The trend in patio design today is leaning toward decorators opting for a more natural approach to patio flooring with the use of stonework.  This can take many forms depending on the overall appearance desired.  Brickwork is often used because it is readily available, easy to install and can be shaped in multifaceted ways.  To see a patio that has been laid in the hearing-bone style of the early 1900’s or an artistic Spanish pattern can provide a source of endless comfort as well as a feeling of luxury often desired in a patio area.  Flagstones are another material used today in patio areas because they are easy to install on a packed sand base and can also be formed into a plethora of intricate, artistic designs that reveal much about your style.  These stones can be found in a variety of natural colors that enhance, not only your yard, but set the tone for the design of your patio, as well.

The final patio base that is most common today is wood.  The choices of materials, designs, and patterns are endless making it one of the most appealing choices on the market.  Initial costs are significantly higher and the maintenance required to preserve the look is more intense, but the overall effect of the finished product is breathtaking.  Decorators today have become extremely creative in designing multi-level, multi-use outdoor spaces that reflect the needs of our changing society.  Patio areas tell people much about who you are so whatever your choice, make sure it’s one you can live with for a lifetime.
