Not only could this diminish the overall value of your home, but what do you do when you realize you’re the only one around with the Jungle inspired home that hasn’t been popular for decades? Your home should not only reflect who you are, but should also make a statement about your awareness of current and future trends in the interior design industry.

Last year’s Urban Chic, with its stark interiors and super clean lines, seems to be fading fast as one new trend toward Roomscapes is gaining popularity. Remodelers are now edging toward a less stylized look that takes a more human approach to interior design providing spaces that are more comfortable and inviting than designs that were preferred in the past. This style includes more spa-like bathrooms that provide a retreat from our hectic, fast-paced, stressed-filled lives as well as the use of reinvented existing pieces of furniture.

What are quickly loosing popularity are the “go green” labels. Although we all want to remain environmentally friendly and aware, just slapping a “green” tag on something doesn’t necessarily make it the best product to have in our homes. We all need to become aware of what materials are used in the products we purchase and their environmental impact on our home, community, and world, but the over-emphasis on “green” products has caused many to question its overuse.

Another trend for countertop products in the kitchen is concrete. Concrete countertops have the distinct advantage of being super inexpensive. Additionally, they can be colored and poured onsite leaving a seamless surface that is extremely durable. As for appliances, color is back. In fact, Viking has just put out a new line that includes fire-engine red and cobalt blue in their color palette. The less antiseptic look makes the kitchen more fun as well as inviting.

Another new trend that is gaining popularity is what’s called Uniquely Me Chic. Based on the mixing of styles and periods, this interior design style capitalizes on an eclectic mix of materials that personalizes the space. Whether your preference is Eco-Friendly or Modern Rustic, the Uniquely Me Chic design can be utilized to enhance the look of any room utilizing what you already have. Additionally, the new trend toward earthy colors and couture decorative pillows adds the foundation and pop you need to make your space come alive.

The interior design trends of 2010 seem to be taking a step back from model magazine styling and back into the real world where people live and this is a great move forward for the industry. It appears that regardless of your personal style, next year you can be uniquely you and still have the trendiest home in town.

The last thing you want to do is spend an exorbitant amount of money remodeling your home only to find the style you chose is passé.
